We all know that 70% of the Earth’s surface consists of water, which is very much essential to life. But, do you know how it got there? Scientists are researching this since long back. Recently, a French team of scientists has initiated to solve the puzzle to some extent. The scientists detected which space rocks were liable behind this. In fact, they even indicated at the fact that Earth is wet even since it took birth! The head of the research team has conveyed a new theory that contradicts the previous findings. According to the prevalent theory, Earth was initially dry in the beginning and it received water through far-reaching asteroids and comets. The early models of the Solar System show that the huge disks of dust and gas that whirled across the Sun and gradually developed the inner planets. Those planets were extremely hot to withstand ice.

This clearly describes the desolate conditions on respectively Mercury, Venus, and Mars. But its does explain about the blue planet Earth. It encompasses a humid atmosphere, immense oceans, and most importantly well-hydrated geology. The researchers speculated that water entered into Earth afterwards. In fact, the key suspects included carbonaceous chondrites which are high in hydrous minerals.

Earthly blocks

There is another group of meteorites namely enstatite chondrites, which comprises of calcium, titanium, and oxygen. It pointed out that these were the building blocks of Earth. However, as the formation of these rocks were close to the Sun, experts assume it to be very dry. Thus, they cannot account the rich reservoirs of water for Earth.  For evaluating the truth, the researchers conducted a study using the technique namely mass spectrometry. They aimed at measuring the levels of hydrogen in a total of 13 enstatite chondrites.

Further, the team discovered that rock consisted of adequate hydrogen content. These can deliver the blue planet three times the mass of water compared to its ocean. Moreover, the team stated that the study only specifies that enstatite chondrites added water to the Earth during its formation.
