Cyclothon: Playing a part to portray the purport of ‘pedal.’

Bhubaneswar: On January 22, 2021, a state-level cycle marathon was conducted in Bhubaneswar, promoting the month of National Road Safety termed as ‘Cyclothon,’ which is methodized by State Transport Authority. It commenced at 6 a.m in the morning on the roads of the capital city. The cyclists pedaled from the OSRTC office(Odisha State Road Transport Corporation), covering the key junctions from AG- Square, Unit- 6 Hospital Square, Shishu Bhawan Square, Raj Mahal Square, Ram Mandir Square till Unit 4. It was organized to proliferate the level of awareness on Road Safety among the active participants of self-transportation. A vast number of cyclists engaged themselves in the Cyclothon to publicize the theme of the event, ‘Pedal for road safety.’ There were varieties of stunts performed by the cyclists to make the event even more eye-catching and amusing.

“Drive safety rules are the best tools.”

This event’s sole purpose is to create a consciousness among the people using private and public transportation and the young choice-riders breaking the road rules and regulations.

Many breakages of road rules such as drink and drive, tripling, not wearing the seat belt in four-wheelers, not wearing a helmet in two-wheelers, over speeding the vehicle, driving on the wrong side of the road, using cell phones while driving, and not following the traffic signals, leads to major road accidents.

Moreover, India has the second-largest road network in the world. So, more road accidents can be expected in this case.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway data, in 2018, it was estimated that India stands in the 3rd position in road accidents. Out of which nearly 1.51 lakhs accidents were fatal.

So, staying alert all the time while driving should be the concern of every individual. Following the traffic signals and rules is beneficial not just for the driver but also for the other riders on the road.

Views of honourable personalities on the execution of Cyclothon.

Minister Behera said, “Safety should be the top priority for everyone in all spheres of life. People should not hurry while driving and obey road etiquette to prevent mishaps.”

Celebrities from the Ollywood Entertainment department like Sabyasachi Mishra and Pappu Pom Pom also witnessed and appreciated the cause of the event.

State Transport Commissioner and MLA Ananta Narayan Jena were also a part of Cyclothon.

Outcomes of Cyclothon: ‘Pedal for road safety’.

The transport ministry has got even more cautious regarding the obligation of the road rules and regulations and the consideration of the safety measures in the National Road Safety Month.

The ministry will now be more strict and alert from February 17 to control the state’s accidents.
