Bollywood Celebrates 21-years of Lagaan

One of the most successful movies of Bollywood, Lagaan today celebrates its 21 years of accomplishment. The movie had touched several milestones, being nominated for the Oscars and Academy awards back then. 


The Hindi-language sports drama movie was written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The film was produced by Aamir Khan, who stars alongside debutant Gracy Singh and the British actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne

The movie is based on the late Victorian period of the British colonial era, where central India and the inhabitants were burdened with heavy taxes amid a severe drought. The movie picturizes the arrogant attitude of the British Raj and the British Indian Army officers. The movie showcases a cricket match between the Britishers and the Indian villagers with a deal of relaxing taxes if the Indians win. The movie beautifully portrays the emotion of Indian hearts to fight for life, comfort, and a good living back days. A movie with true emotion and a nationalist feeling arising masterpiece. 

The Lagaan gave all the movie’s characters recognized fame, including Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh. Aamir got immense fame and was known as ‘Mr. Perfectionist’ in that era, he was signed for more successful projects after Lagaan. The Director Ashutosh Gowariker to Akhilendra Mishra, Gracy Singh, Yashpal Sharma, Raghuvir Yadav, Rajesh Vivek Upadhyay, Daya Shankar Pandey, Rajendranath Zutshi, Raja Awasthi, Suhasini Mulay, Pradeep Ram Singh Rawat, and Amin Gazi got a lot of attention after then.

Director Ashutosh Gowariker got big projects like Swades featuring Shah Rukh Khan and many other successful films, which gave all the characters immense and massive acknowledgment from the audience. 

The movie was the third highest grossing Indian movie behind Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, which gained much popularity worldwide.


The film won several awards both on National and International platforms. The movie bagged eight National Film Awards, eight Filmfare Awards, eight Screen Awards and 10 IIFA Awards
