The COVID-19 situation has hit Odisha really hard. During this pandemic, approximately 8,53,777 migrant workers have head back to the state till now. Yesterday, the monsoon session began in the state. At the first day of the event, the Labour Minister of the state Mr Susanta Singh has highlighted the matter at the assembly hall.  In which context did the subject arise?

According to the sources, the Congress MLA Mr Santosh Singh Saluja teased the matter at Odisha Assembly yesterday. In respond, Susanta Singh said that most of the Odia migrant workers have returned to the state from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Gujrat. Speaking of their mode of transport, State Labour Minister mentioned about the 277 special trains that the Centre arranged specifically for the migrant workers.

While discussing the matter, Mr Susanta Singh stated that the Odisha government has paid for their transport expense. He said that the authority has contributed Rs 9 crore to the East Coast Railway. The minister further stated that they are not aware of the accurate numbers of the labourers among the returnees. Singh also mentioned that the state government is trying to estimate the numbers of the workers block-wise.

Alongside all these, Singh revealed that while returning to the state during the lockdown period, two migrants died pathetically. However, the Labour department has always stood by the migrants. Mr Singh further stated that in the current situation, the section is accumulating information regarding the ex-gratia that the victims’ family received.
